The Sunshine Coast is 140 km north of Brisbane, characterized by many renowned beaches, and lush green hinterland including a number of national parks. Centres include Noosa Heads, Alexandra Headland, Mooloolaba, Coolum, Maroochydore and Caloundra. Popular with retirees and holidaymakers, the area has numerous golf links, including many resort courses, and is serviced by a local airport in Maroochydore and an international airport in Brisbane.
Tropical North Queensland is a tourism and retirement mecca with frequent flights conveniently connecting the area to major cities around Australia, and international flights from Cairns. Popular attractions include Cairns, Port Douglas and the Daintree Rainforest, the Great Barrier Reef, Hervey Bay and nearby Fraser Island, Townsville, Magnetic Island, and the Whitsundays including Airlie Beach, Whitehaven Beach, Hamilton Island and Daydream Island.
